Window pulls and exposure blending

A bright room and a clear view in the same frame, without the flat look of an overdone HDR.

What a window pull is

An interior can be five or more stops darker than the view through its windows. One exposure can't hold both. A window pull takes the window area from a darker frame, where the view is visible, and blends it into the main exposure. Done well, the window reads as glass with a view; done badly, it glows or looks pasted on.

Keeping it natural

We keep a little brightness in the windows so they still read as light sources, and we avoid the gray, flat look of heavy tone mapping. Frames and mullions stay crisp, and reflections on floors and countertops stay consistent with the light from the window.

Views and screens

We don't add views that weren't there. If the view is a parking lot, it stays a parking lot, just exposed properly. Window screens and blinds stay as shot unless you ask us to adjust them.

Questions

Do you replace skies seen through windows?

Only on request, and we recommend telling the end client. For real estate, check MLS rules on edited photos.

Can you fix halos around window frames?

Yes. Halos come from automatic blending; manual masking removes them.

Back from a shoot with a full card? Send a few frames and tell us the look. We edit a test, then the set.
